Speakers at a public lecture in the Adamawa State Capital have challenged northern youths to get involved in the electoral process and flush out politicians not using their positions for the good of all.
Speakers at the ‘Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series’ organised by the Students’ Wing of Coalition of Northern Groups (SW-CNG) urged youths to rise with the power of their ballot papers in the next elections to change leadership at all levels and revive the lost glory of the North and the nation.
“We made wrong choices of leaders from the president to governors. There is enough money to educate all our children free, but bandits in government are flying around spending our money on themselves,” said Dr Usman Yusuf who delivered the keynote address at the lecture series.
“Old people who benefitted so much from the system and who should sustain or repair the damage to the system are the ones still sitting in offices to enslave you,” the keynote speaker told the young Emerson of the Coalition of Northern Groups who gathered at the venue of the lecture.
Usman Yusuf who is a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and who said he had problems while at the helm of the NHIS because he refused to join in the ‘buffet of corruption’ within and outside the NHIS, maintained that it is up to the youths to correct the things that are wrong with Nigeria.
“The Federal Government says it will have taken 100 million people out of poverty in 10 years but the way things are going, in 10 years, 100 million people will have gone deeper into poverty,” he said.
He, however, faulted the uprising by youths in the Southeast and South West as well as the banditry in the Northwest and Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast, blaming them all on elders.
“Our elders have lost control of their children, that’s why clowns like Kanu and Igboho are doing the nonsense that they are doing, being people who do not know what civil war is, and that’s why there are Boko Haram insurgents ruining the Northeast and bandits dictating events in the North West,” he asserted.
A former Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Isa Tijjani who chaired the Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series, and who described Ambassador Mariam Sule (late) as one of the very best leaders Nigeria was blessed with, condemned the acts of people in government and charged youths to challenge the system.
‘A lot of thieves are in the government of Nigeria. Are you going to sit still and allow them their free reign?” he asked the youths.
A lecturer at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, Dr Ahmadu Shehu who presented the lead paper of the lecture, urged youths and elders alike to forge unity of purpose and revive the old values that made the North one united and strong region.
