Permit me to give you a dictionary meaning of the above words. Mafia: - A crime syndicate, a trusted group of associates as of a political leader. Strategy: - The science and art of military command as applied to overall planning and conduct of warfare. A plan of action intended to accomplish a specific goal.
In the late 80s and 90s when I was still living in the Eastern part of Nigeria; Onitsha, a town widely known for its commercial activities. Like every other commercial nerve in Africa, the crime wave was on the increase as at that time. The then Governor of Anambra State; Chinwoke Mbadinuju made every effort humanly possible to curb the rate of crime in the city, including equipping the Nigeria police force within the state especially Onitsha, working with the traders to create vigilante within the market. He even went spiritual by introducing morning prayers in all the market in Onitsha and in government offices.
When all these failed, as people are still being robbed of their hard-earned money in all nooks and crannies in the city, Onitsha was losing her customers as many traders stopped coming to Onitsha because of fear. He introduced the dreaded local vigilante known as Bakassi as the last available option. Among all the achievements of this group to rid Onitsha and Nnewi out of criminal elements, the one that eventually destroyed the dreaded Bakassi was the killing a notorious prophet known as 'Eddy' who many believed was involved in using diabolical means in preparing wooden staff for his client which serves as an emblem of protection and authority to many. Some of the big wigs who many believe their source of income are not genuine were his major clients.
How was Bakassi destroyed or rather sent parking from Anambra State?
The same people who felt threatened by the activities of Bakassi among whom are ritualists, sponsors of criminal activities, fraudsters and some occult group members decided to use Mafia strategies to destroy Bakassi. We in Onitsha then started hearing slogans like "fake Bakassi and original Bakassi. The fake Bakassi created by these social deviants, will dress as the original Bakassi and will move about abducting and attacking innocent men and women to the amazement of the members of their community. The same evil people will go to the media to state some reasons why Bakassi should leave the state, citing the killing of innocent people as a major reason why Bakassi should leave state, with the alibi that “they have deviated from their calling.” Before our very eyes, the beloved of the people; Bakassi was sent out of the states. Today Onitsha has gradually gone back to her usual self as den of thieves and robbers.
Now the South-East politicians have come with that same Mafia strategy, which includes, writing false news about IPOB and her leader, secret abduction, illegal incarceration and extra-judicial killing of IPOB members. Now the latest one is the linking of the unknown gun men with the activities of the Eastern Security Network (ESN). IPOB has maintained that ESN was created to protect our farmlands and our people who are being raped and beheaded by Fulani terrorists from outside Nigeria hiding under the guise of Herdsmen.
Who created the unknown gun men? Before now we hear about unknown gun men, Bandits, Boko Haram, ISWAP, Miyetti Allah in the Northern Nigeria, now we can authoritatively say that terrorism has come down to the Eastern part of Nigeria originally known as Biafra land. Linking the activities of ESN with unknown gun men is another form of deceit. The day ESN was launched, it was announced globally on air with their job description neatly spelt out.
In case you don't know, some states in the North are already fed up with the menace of the Fulani herders and already serving them quit notice but down here in the South, your political leaders are eager to please their slave masters by killing IPOB members and bombing ESN camps so as to give way to the Fulani Herdsmen to invade our land, while they; the Governors will be rewarded with a seat in the Senate or a ministerial post, to continue in the looting gymnastics.
